SMOOTH LONG SHANK FREEHAND SMOKING PIPE

About the Artist

Josef Bernd Schäfer was born in Bonn, Germany, a small town on the river Rhine (birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven, capital of West Germany from 1949 – 1991).  He grew up with two quite different interests: art and handicraft. He learned to play the violin, but the result was rather disappointing. Later he delightedly started making smoking pipes, using only a few tools and drilled briar blocks: The result was rather good.

To his regret (but probably it was his luck), he did not become a professional pipe maker - at first. Instead, he developed a love for scientific work and became a professor of psychology at the well-known University of Muenster / Germany. In 2002 he was awarded a doctorate honorary by the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

However, during so many years he always was dreaming about making pipes with professional tools. In 2008, he put his motivation and skills to the test by Bertram Safferling.  As a result, he set up a professional pipe-workshop. At that time he substantiated his skills with some well-known German pipe makers - as well in exchange of good practices as in joint projects.

"The fit of shape and wood grain has a high priority in my work, as well as the continuous improvement of production quality. I only use the finest Italian woods, and German ebonite; applications only if it seems necessary. My previous love of fancy shapes has since evolved to more classic shapes, based on Danish design. This disciplining of my work I owe especially my friend Hermann Hennen, whose pipes are designed and crafted to meet the highest possible demands. He gave away to me many secrets of the pipe construction in the past few years" the artsan said.

Designing and executing of a shape is in any case a challenge for him. To get close to the variety of forms of expression, he has- strictly derived from the findings of social psychological research on emotions – developed, together with Herman, the 7-MMM (7-Magnificent-Mood-Model ©). It means, in the result: The path to complete enjoyment is narrow. The preciousness of a pipe alone does not make it free. A pipe must meet in its expression the prevailing mood of the pipe smoker. The 7-Magnificent-Moods-Model states that the diversity of great moods can be represented within a range, intersected by eight types of shape expressions.
